Double Light

I don't know if I'm old enough to do two lights yet... I think I should go back to just one. But I am getting better at brushwork.

You have to understand the hierarchy of values in your picture because they're all relative. You can't sculpt form until you have the full value range on your canvas and you know where the light is coming from. It's a lot harder to tell values apart when they're gradients, so simplify.

Gonna keep it grayscale for a while. Working on my brushwork and quick form rendering. It's hard.

Time to move onto something else, maybe master studies or something, I haven't done enough of those.

Learning

Then I decided to do another friday's study back to back to apply all the things I learned.

Painting has a lot more to do with sculpting than you think. If you think about it, you use your photoshop brushes the same say as z-brush or mudbox brushes. You're crafting form with different shapes/stencils.

I have a new appreciation for Jaime Jones. That guy must be a machine. Or maybe that's just because I do all my studies standing. I pretty much go until I can't hold myself up from hunger and exhaustion..

Two hours and bit is just enough, I think. Still working on getting the gradients right. I've got a long way to go...

There's a reason why female faces are often adorned with feathers/ have feathery hair. The texture brings out their smooth skin, while invoking weightlessness.

When studying something, you have to make sure that your drawing is immaculate, because you need to practice casting shadows correctly, and making sure that your values/colours align with the distance, direction, hardness and temperature of the light. Like I said, I have a long way to go..

yesterday's study! like anton, i've found i much prefer spending a longer time on one study, than very little time on 2 studies.

GETTING LATE

Finally got around to doing a longer study. I know what I need to work on now. I think it's just gonna be 3 hour portraits and nudes for a while. Really need to get a hang of shape and skin tone.

Imaginations from the Other Side

Yo dawg, I herd you like lights, so I put a light in yo light.

As we have just learned, incident lighting is hard, and in order to portray it correctly, you need to adjust all the non-light-emitting values down. That was a green lamp being lit by a warm light source. My brain took a fart.

This is actually one of my favorite pictures ever, so I took my time with it. Dat ass....

I should really refine my photostudies more. Or my still lifes. Or both. The point of this is to spend 3 hours every day getting better. I'm lucky if I spend 2.5.

It's very difficult to draw precisely while standing up. Why do I keep choosing hard surfaces?

Study from the movie Tangled. Must do more of these, the lighting in that movie is amaaaaaaazing.
